        1. Introduction. Food availability is a problem for everyone and especially for the developing world. Food security means the provision and access to nutritionally sufficient and culturally accepted food by each member of the household for healthy life obtained through .   Knowledge of Africa’s complex farming systems, set in their socio-economic and environmental context, is an essential ingredient to developing effective strategies for improving food and nutrition security. Farming systems research can contribute to the nutritional wellbeing and food security of households in a number of ways. With its comprehensive, interdisciplinary nature and its aim to improve the viability of small farms, such research is geared towards promoting sustainable livelihoods.
